Things to Do in Graz, Austria: Best Attractions and Travel Guide

    Harry BrookHarry Brook11 Mins Read

Before visiting Graz, I struggled to figure out what the city was really like. Many travel guides simply list attractions without explaining which places are actually worth your time. I kept asking myself the same questions many travelers have. Is Graz just a quick stop between Vienna and Salzburg? Can you really explore it in one day? And which places should you focus on if you have limited time?

After spending several days in Graz, walking through the Old Town, visiting museums, climbing Schlossberg Hill, and exploring local markets, I realized the city offers far more than most guides suggest. The historic center is compact and easy to explore on foot, yet it is filled with beautiful squares, hidden courtyards, art spaces, and food spots that reveal the character of the region. I explored the city slowly, speaking with locals, trying Styrian dishes, and watching daily life unfold in places like Hauptplatz and Lendplatz Market.

This guide focuses on the places that truly stood out during my visit. If you are visiting for the first time or planning a short stop in Austria, these experiences will help you see the most interesting parts of Graz without feeling rushed.

The Best Things to Do in Graz

Many of the best attractions in Graz sit inside the historic center. This makes the city very easy to explore on foot. During my visit I walked between most landmarks within minutes, which allowed me to see several places in a single day without rushing.

These attractions give a great introduction to the culture, history, and architecture of the city.

Take in the Sights on Schlossberg Hill

Schlossberg Hill rises above the Old Town and is one of the most famous places in Graz. From the top you can see the red rooftops of the historic center and the Mur River flowing through the city.

There are three ways to reach the top:

    • Walk up the Schlossberg stairs
    • Take the Schlossberg funicular railway
    • Use the glass elevator inside the mountain

I climbed the stairs early in the morning. The walk takes around fifteen minutes and offers great views along the way. Many locals also use this path for exercise.

At the top, you will find walking paths, gardens, cafés, and several viewpoints.

Travel tip from my visit: sunset offers the most beautiful view over the city.

See Graz from the Schlossberg Clock Tower

The Clock Tower is the symbol of Graz. It stands at the top of Schlossberg Hill and has watched over the city for centuries.

See Graz from the Schlossberg Clock Tower

One detail that surprises many visitors is the clock design. The larger hand shows hours while the smaller hand shows minutes.

From the viewpoint near the tower you can see almost the entire Old Town. I stayed here longer than planned because the view of the rooftops and surrounding hills was so impressive.

This area is also one of the best photo locations in the city.

    Explore Old Town Graz

The Old Town is the historic heart of Graz and one of the best preserved city centers in Central Europe. Walking through the streets feels like stepping into another era.

    The area features:

    • Colorful buildings
    • Renaissance architecture
    • Small cafés and shops
    • Hidden courtyards

I spent my first afternoon wandering these streets without a strict plan. That turned out to be the best way to discover the character of the city.

    Historic Centre of Graz

The historic center combines medieval streets with Italian Renaissance architecture, giving Graz a unique atmosphere.

Because of its cultural importance, the area is recognized as aUNESCO World Heritage Site. Important landmarks in this area include:

    • Graz Cathedral
    • Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II
    • Landhaus courtyard

The Landhaus courtyard became one of my favorite quiet spots in the city. The elegant arches and calm atmosphere make it a great place to pause during a walking tour.

    Hauptplatz Graz

Hauptplatz is the main square of Graz and the central meeting place for locals and visitors.

    Hauptplatz Graz

    The square features:

    • The historic city hall
    • Colourful buildings
    • Tram lines crossing the plaza

When I visited, a small market was happening in the square. People were buying flowers, bread, and fresh food, which gave the area a lively atmosphere.

Many main streets begin here, so you will likely pass through Hauptplatz several times during your visit.

    Visit the Styrian Armoury

The Styrian Armoury is one of the most unique museums in Europe. The building holds around 32,000 historic weapons and pieces of armor, making it the largest historic armoury in the world.

Inside the museum you will see:

    • Swords
    • Shields
    • Helmets
    • Full suits of armor

Walking through the rooms feels like stepping into medieval history. The rows of armor displayed on wooden racks create a dramatic scene.

    Admire Graz Cathedral

Graz Cathedral is a Gothic church built between 1438 and 1464. The outside looks simple compared with many large European cathedrals, but the interior feels calm and elegant.

Outside the cathedral you will see a faded mural called the Landplagenbild. The painting shows historical disasters that once affected the region.

I visited during a quiet afternoon and found it to be a peaceful break from the busy streets.

    Discover Kunsthaus Graz

Kunsthaus Graz is the city’s modern art museum. The building is often called the Friendly Alien because of its unusual shape.

    Discover Kunsthaus Graz

The blue structure stands beside the Mur River and looks very different from the historic architecture around it.

    Inside you will find:

    • Modern art exhibitions
    • Multimedia displays
    • Creative installations

Even if you do not enter the museum, the building itself is worth seeing because of its striking design.

    Walk Across Murinsel

Murinsel is a floating island located in the Mur River. It was built in 2003 when Graz was named European Capital of Culture.

Two pedestrian bridges connect the island to both sides of the river.

    Inside Murinsel you will find:

    • A café
    • Seating areas
    • A playground

I walked across it in the evening when the lights reflected on the water. The calm atmosphere made it a relaxing stop during the day.

    Visit Eggenberg Palace

Eggenberg Palace sits just outside the city center and can be reached easily by tram.

    Visit Eggenberg Palace

The palace was built in the seventeenth century and is surrounded by large gardens and parkland. Together with the historic center, it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing.

Inside the palace you can explore:

    • Historic state rooms
    • Decorated ceilings
    • Art collections

While walking through the gardens I also saw several peacocks wandering across the park.

    Step into Secret Graz

Beyond the main landmarks, Graz has neighborhoods that show a more local and creative side of the city.

One afternoon I crossed the Mur River and explored the Lend district. The atmosphere felt very different from the Old Town.

    You will find:

    • Street art
    • Creative shops
    • Small cafés

Exploring this neighborhood helped me experience everyday life in Graz.

    Street Art

Street art appears across several areas of the city, especially in Lend and Gries.

Large murals decorate walls and underpasses. Some artworks change each year, which keeps the area interesting for repeat visitors.

Walking through these streets without a plan helped me discover several impressive murals.

    Lendplatz Farmers Market

Lendplatz Market is one of the best places to see local life in Graz.

    Farmers sell products such as:

    • Vegetables
    • Cheese
    • Bread
    • Pumpkin seed oil

I arrived early in the morning and grabbed coffee from a nearby café while locals shopped for fresh ingredients.

    Visit Graz Museums

Graz has many museums covering history, art, and science.

Some of the most interesting include:

    • Universalmuseum Joanneum
    • Kunsthaus Graz
    • Styrian Armoury

Each museum shows a different aspect of the region’s culture.

    Universalmuseum Joanneum

Universalmuseum Joanneum is one of the largest museum institutions in Austria.

It includes several museums across the city covering:

    • Natural history
    • Archaeology
    • Art and culture

These museums offer deeper insight into the history of Styria.

    Enjoy the Graz Food Scene

Food became one of the highlights of my visit.

The Styrian region is known for fresh produce and traditional dishes.

    Some foods to try include:

    • Pumpkin seed oil dishes
    • Backhendl fried chicken
    • Fresh pastries

Many restaurants focus on seasonal ingredients, which makes the food feel fresh and local.

Best Places to Eat in Graz

Good food can be found throughout the city.

Some of the best areas include:

    • Cafés around Hauptplatz
    • Restaurants in the Lend district
    • Bakeries in Old Town streets

One afternoon I sat in a quiet courtyard café enjoying coffee and pastry while watching people walk through the square.
