25 Amazing Things to Do in Maui for Your First Island Trip

    Harry BrookHarry Brook8 Mins Read

Planning a trip to Maui sounds exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming at first. When I started researching my own trip, I quickly realized how many activities the island offers. Beaches, snorkeling tours, scenic drives, hiking trails, and cultural experiences all appeared on travel lists. The problem was figuring out which places were truly worth visiting and how to fit them into a short vacation. Many guides simply list attractions without helping you decide what actually makes a trip memorable.

After recently spending several days exploring the island, I learned that Maui is best enjoyed by choosing the right mix of experiences. Some activities are famous for good reason, like snorkeling at Molokini Crater or watching the sunset at Haleakala. Other places are quieter spots that many visitors overlook. In this guide, I share the things to do in Maui that truly stood out during my trip, along with practical tips that helped me plan better and avoid common travel mistakes.

Best Activities and Things To Do in Maui, Hawaii

    Go Snorkeling at Molokini Crater

Snorkeling at Molokini Crater was one of the most memorable experiences of my trip. This crescent shaped volcanic crater sits a few miles off the Maui coast.

I joined an early morning tour, and the water was incredibly clear. Visibility can reach more than 100 feet, which makes it easy to see coral reefs, tropical fish, and even a sea turtle swimming near the reef. Morning tours are usually calmer, which makes snorkeling easier for beginners.

Tip from my trip: bring reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof camera.

    Canoe Among the Sea Turtles

Canoeing along the Maui coastline was a calm and relaxing activity. Local guides take visitors out in traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoes.

    Canoe Among the Sea Turtles

During the paddle, we saw sea turtles swimming nearby. The guide also shared stories about Hawaiian ocean traditions and local culture. This activity is great if you want a peaceful experience on the water.

    Sugar Cane Vodka and Rum

During my trip I visited a local distillery that produces vodka and rum from Maui sugar cane.

The tour explained the full process, from growing sugar cane to producing the final drink. Walking through the facility helped me understand the island’s farming culture. At the end of the tour visitors can taste a few samples.

    Sunset and Stargazing at Haleakala

Watching the sunset at Haleakala was one of the most powerful moments of my trip.

Haleakala is a massive volcano rising 10,023 feet above sea level. When I reached the summit, clouds stretched across the landscape below. As the sun slowly disappeared, the sky turned deep orange and red. After dark, the sky filled with stars, and the view became even more impressive.

Important tip: bring warm clothing because the summit becomes very cold.

    The Nakalele Point Blowhole

Nakalele Point is a rugged coastal area formed by volcanic lava rock.

    The Nakalele Point Blowhole

A natural blowhole pushes ocean water high into the air when waves crash through a lava tube. The walk down takes about 10–15 minutes.

Safety tip: always stay a safe distance from the blowhole opening because large waves can create strong pressure.

    Take a Sail Excursion

A sailing trip along the Maui coast was one of the most relaxing parts of my visit.

During the cruise we watched dolphins swimming near the boat while the sun slowly set over the ocean. Some sailing tours also include snorkeling stops or dinner cruises. For couples visiting Maui, a sunset sailing trip is a great experience.

    Beaches

Exploring beaches quickly became one of my favorite things to do in Maui.

    Beaches
    • Ka’anapali Beach is one of the most famous beaches on the island. It has soft sand and clear water that is great for swimming and snorkeling.
    • Ho’okipa Beach Park is another unique location. It is famous for windsurfing and large waves. In the evening, sea turtles often rest on the sand.

Walking along these beaches during sunset was one of the most peaceful parts of my trip.

    Water Activities

The ocean plays a major role in Maui travel.

Visitors spend their days snorkeling, surfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Molokini Crater is one of the best snorkeling locations. The north shore attracts surfers because of its strong waves.

Between December and April, humpback whales migrate through Maui waters. Whale watching tours have become one of the most exciting seasonal activities.

    Land Activities

Maui also offers beautiful landscapes away from the beach.

The Road to Hana is one of the most famous scenic drives in Hawaii. The road includes more than 600 curves and over 50 narrow bridges.

During my drive, I stopped at waterfalls, black sand beaches, and small roadside stands selling fresh fruit. Iao Valley is another beautiful place with green mountains and short walking trails. Exploring these landscapes was one of the best things to do in Maui.

    Hidden Gems in Maui

Sharp lava rock formations with dramatic ocean views.
    • Makawao Town

    • Pineapple Farm Tours
Families can learn how pineapples grow and taste fresh fruit.

    Food & Drink

Trying local food is an important part of the Maui experience.

Fresh seafood appears on many menus. One of my favorite meals was grilled fish tacos from a small beach café.

Food trucks are popular across the island and serve poke bowls, shaved ice, and tropical fruit. Farmers’ markets are great places to try fresh pineapple, mango, and other local snacks.

    Culture & History

Maui has a rich cultural history connected to the land and ocean. Many visitors attend a traditional Hawaiian luau, where they can watch hula dancing and enjoy local dishes.

Historic towns like Lahaina show the island’s past through art galleries, old buildings, and small shops. Learning about Hawaiian culture added depth to my visit.

Free Things to Do in Maui

Traveling in Maui can be expensive, but many great experiences are free.

    • Beach hopping
    • Watching sunset
    • Driving scenic coastal roads
    • Turtle watching at Ho’okipa Beach
    • Exploring small towns

Some of my favourite moments on the island cost nothing.

Final Thoughts on the Best Things to Do in Maui

After spending time exploring Maui, I realized the island offers much more than beautiful beaches. Each day brought a new experience. One morning, I was snorkeling in clear water surrounded by fish. Later in the trip, I stood above the clouds at Haleakala watching the sunset.
